I think they provide a nice balance to the girls-kick-butt (see more) series out there...don't get me wrong, I love the work of Kim Harrison and Laurell K. Hamilton (to name a couple), but it's nice to see that authors can create plausible male leads in the supernatural fiction world, too."

  10. Bookshop_Lady recommends Any Given Doomsday by Lori Handeland, "Fans of Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files" urban fantasy series will enjoy Lori Handeland's new series which begins in Nov. 2008 with "Any Given Doomsday." (see more) Just be aware that there is much more sex in "Doomsday," and it's far more graphic than any Jim Butcher has given us."

Storm Front is an intriguing mystery set in a really incredible universe. I loved the characters we were introduced to - Murphy, Dresden and (of course) Bob. ( )

Harry Dresden is the only wizard listed in the phone book in Chicago, Illinois and he offers his services to help people find lost things, solve mysteries, and anything else he thinks he can be paid for. He's on retainer with the Chicago Police Department as a permanent consultant on crimes that seem to have a magical aspect to them. This time, he's called in to provide answers to a series of really gruesome murders committed from a distance by some sort of evil sorcery and as the hours tick by, Harry realizes that the next victim is very likely going to be him.

A very interesting character, written with humor and a certain panache. The mystery was extremely weak -- I figured out whodunit before the end of the third chapter -- but the characters were engaging enough to keep me reading. I'll definitely be reading the rest of this series and likely will be on the lookout for reruns of the TV series aired on Syfy a while back. ( )

I wasn't expecting much from Storm Front. I owned the book for a while, but continued to put off reading it. I see now what a mistake that was. This book was a fast paced, easy read that I just could not put down. Wizards and potions and mystery and humor, it was like Harry Potter but with the possibility of someone having sex. I'm so glad I gave this one a try and can't wait to get started on the rest of the series. ( )

Harry Dresden is a blue-collar wizard. He fights the forces of evil, but he still has to pay his bills. Dresden is working with the Chicago PD to stop of murderous wizard, before that wizard finds Dresden. Fans of the series will enjoy meeting familiar characters for the first time: Police Detective Murphy, Toot-toot (a pizza-loving faerie), Morgan (White Council's executioner), and Bob the Skull. ( )

Harry Dresden--Wizard
Lost items found. Paranormal investigations.
Consulting. Advice. Reasonable rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties, or Other Entertainment.

Harry Dresden is the best at what he does. Well, technically, he's the only at what he does. So when the Chicago P.D. has a case that transcends mortal creativity or capability, they come to him for answers. For the "everyday" world is actually full of strange and magical things--and most of them don't play too well with humans. That's where Harry comes in. Takes a wizard to catch a--well, whatever.

There's just one problem. Business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. And that's when things start to get... interesting.

Magic. It can get a guy killed.
